Make Someone’s Day

P.S. (Pre-Script in this case): I actually wrote that post last night and it didn’t update. So this is a totally new post today. I’m excited that I’m blogging two days in a row, this is why I tell you that.

Okay, so down to business. I am at Starbucks working (don’t worry – this is my lunch break). And all of a sudden this girl comes in. She’s probably 20-ish. She seems kind of quiet and maybe a little awkward. Well this older barista yells her name, comes out from behind the counter and gives her the biggest hug I have seen in ages – we’re talking Ben Grindle style. She spends literally 10 minutes talking to her about what’s going on in the girl’s life and how much she has missed her. She told her that every day she comes to work, she wishes she’ll see her car because she loves whenever she sees her. She told her she thinks about her often.

Now I don’t know the back-story on this. The barista was one of the best that’s ever helped me, which leads me to believe she’s a stand-up lady. But who knows, she could be annoying or obnoxious. But I couldn’t help smiling at how much this barista was encouraging this girl. She made her feel like the only person in the room.

When other people have done that for me, no matter who they are or what their personality is, it makes.my.day. I feel like that person is truly thankful I’m on this planet and cares about me a lot. Who doesn’t love that feeling??

So because of this experience, I will be finding someone’s day to make. Whether or not it changes their week for the better, I know that I will get a smile from making someone feel like they are the most important person in the room. Don’t we all need that every now and then?

Interests of the Moment

So I am the queen of urging others to post to their blogs. I love hearing about their crazy antics and recent life occurrences. However, as others are quick to point out, I’m not the best about updating others via my blog. Much of this comes from an indecision about what to write about. For example, I sat here for about ten minutes pondering whether to talk about my new work from home situation, the weekend’s events in Toccoa, the movies I’ve seen lately, etc. None of them seem that exciting to me though.

Despite this indecision, I’m making a command decision to move forward – to plow through the uncertainty. Even if that means posting something mediocre at best.

Therefore, I will update you on my interests of the moment. A conglomeration of the items floating through my head right now; a medley of thoughts if you will…

  • Honeymoon registries: Why did I not think of this? A friend of mine getting married shortly had a registry where people could buy them excursions, spa treatments, dinners, etc. This would have been a genius idea! I’m furious with myself for not thinking about it.
  • Wedding albums: I hate the options that photo-book-creating websites are giving people right now. It’s like you have to choose between quality or control. I want both, dagnabit! So I finally found this wedding album creator that fit the bill: quality, control, good design, creativity. Then I looked at the price… albums begin at $5,000 for a custom piece. Um, no thank you! So I decided to make my own album. I’m creative, I can do quality work when forced, I’m really cheap! So I signed up for a 30 day trial of PhotoShop Elements and am literally creating my wedding album with a deadline. I have to say it’s going quite nicely. Along with photos, I’m including letters, pieces of advice received from wedding guests, vows, old photos, etc. When all is said and done, others may think it’s a little tacky or over-done, but I am going to love it. I’ll try and remember to post the PDFs here one day. Then you can tell me what you really think.
  • Home Office Decor: So about a month ago, I found out I could work from home. All I can say is that there is a gracious Lord in heaven that truly cares about us on an intimate level. Otherwise, this situation never would have unfolded. Well since I never thought this situation would unfold, I didn’t really have any work done on a “home office.” All of a sudden, I’m realizing that the rooms you work in do affect your mood and productivity (read: this, this, that, or this). All this information solved the mystery of why my sanctuary of a living room wasn’t really stimulating me to do my work. So now I’m transforming our guest room into my home office and trying to figure out how to decorate it to inspire creativity and focused work. Some of the rooms I like so far are: eclectic office; memory board style; secret nook style; Santa Monica style; earthy office; oh how I long for a nook (though I’d make it cozier than this one); if my office were like this, I’d feel like I was in Pride and Prejudice; and this may be my favorite; although, if I could make this into an office it could be my favorite; ahh, they just keep getting BETTER!; all I want is books, books and more books. I’m all over the place. But I want books and flowers EVERYWHERE!
  • Recipes: Finally, I’m falling in love with cooking. Who would have thought? I can’t find any recipe boxes and cards I like though. I think I’m looking in the wrong places. Maybe I’ll make my own.

That’s all. It may have been mediocre, but now you know what’s on my mind. :)

Confession: I’m Obsessed…

…with FastCompany! Please tell me there is someone out there who shares my obsession!

I was informed of the incredible site by Dwain Cox when I was looking for a good publication that talked about business in an interesting way.

This real and online magazine has a specific focus on Innovation in the areas of Technology, Design, Ethonomics and Leadership, and prides itself on reporting cutting edge news in each of those areas. While I must admit that I am not very savvy in the areas of Technology or Design, it is fun to read up on what is going on. My favorite posts are those related to Ethonomics and Leadership.

For a taste of the types of stories they write, check out these links:

If you don’t love it, that’s okay… tell me what you like to read! I am always looking for something new and good. :)

Hello Life!

This world we live in moves way too fast for me. I’m starting to realize that, in my natural state, I would move at about a fourth of the pace of everyone I come in contact with in Atlanta. Hopefully that fact doesn’t say something too bad about me, but it’s the truth. Life is at it’s best with me when I can do one thing at a time, not a million tasks at once; when I can take a moment to absorb everything going on around me, not just fly by it only looking straight ahead; when I have the time to take a walk, not be in a car for three hours a day; when I can have a moment at the end of every day to enjoy the company of my loved ones.

Lately, life has just not been like that. I’ve been going a million miles a minute, working an incredible, but extremely fast-paced job, spending 15 hours a week in a car, filling my evenings and weekends with so many plans that it’s hard to find time to sleep. I love my life and having so many wonderful things going on, but it’s time to take a chill pill.

The Lord is good, and in His infinite mercy has provided me a few alternatives lately to the chaotic lifestyle I’ve been used to. Changes are being made every day that give me more time to be the wife I was called to be, the friend I was called to be and the believer I was called to be. Because of these changes, a lot of uncertainty clouds the future. But, I have so much peace that the Lord will provide.

Psalm 119:105 has been on my heart a lot lately: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” What I love about this verse is that it uses such specific language. Not to get into the too nitty-gritty, but a lamp’s light only shines so far, and a “path” typically seems like a short distance, as opposed to the term “journey.” The Psalmist didn’t say, “Your word is a flood light to my feet and a light beam to my entire life’s journey.” All God has promised is to shed a little light on the path right in front of me. He has given me the information I need to know now, the light to see what direction I need to walk in at this very moment. At a certain point, that light fades and I can’t see what’s ahead of me. But I know that He’ll keep shining that light into my immediate path so that I know the next step to take.

There’s such a freedom in that. I’ve always been a planner, but I feel so liberated giving up control {read: worry} of my every move. I’ve lived long enough that I can now see that every little thing I ever worried about always ended up working out for my best. Why would the Lord abandon me now? He knows the plans He has for me and they are for my good and His ultimate glory.

So, hello life! I am happy to see you again and to experience the joys that you bring.

A Little Sneak Peak…

So I don’t have all of my pictures from the wedding back yet, but our favorite photographers on the planet, Chad and Tina Pritchard of The Long Farewell, did share our wedding slideshow with us!!

I hope you love it as much as I do!

Week-long Getaway

Joel starts training this week for Northwestern Mutual! We are so pumped about this. God truly provides and takes care of us in ways far beyond what we would imagine for ourselves.

Well, as a bonus to Joel beginning his job, his training takes place in Atlanta and his new company is paying for us to stay near the training site since we live so far away. There’s something so fun about staying in a hotel – especially in the city you work in!

The part I’m most thankful for: This hotel is 23 minutes from my office. That is exactly 60 minutes shorter than my usual commute. :) I like my normal drive, but I can’t say I’m not excited about that extra hour of sleep I’m going to get in the morning!!

Shake Date

I am thankful for the milkshake Joel bought me at Chick-fil-A. :) It was strawberry  and he got chocolate. It was a date. Dates are fun.

Settling In

It probably comes as no surprise that Joel and I have been keeping our schedule pretty full since we got married. It’s not that we like being insanely busy, it’s just habit I think.

Well, thankfully, we have been intentional lately about sticking around Madison and making it home.

It’s amazing how friendly everyone is here and how willing they are to welcome us into their town. In the past two weeks, we’ve gotten to meet a ton of incredible people. Each person we meet and the experiences we have reinforce my belief that God has specifically put us in Madison for a purpose.

So, last week, we met our precious neighbor Christy (I know, I know – we’ve lived here two months and just met our neighbor – I’m an awful person!) - a wonderful, godly girl who has a passion for helping others, demonstrated by her most recent jobs at DFCS and Mercy Health Center in Athens. I truly hope we become better friends – she is a joy to be around.

I also met Jolene, who owns our local coffee shop – Perk Avenue. It is incredible! It’s coffee shop meets weekend restaurant meets jazz bar. Needless to say, I spend as much time there as possible. If you ever get a chance to visit and you like sweet things – try the Candy Bar coffee drink: it’s a mix of caramel and chocolate – delish! Anyway, back to Jolene. My first encounter with her was when I was ordering coffee, preparing to do a day-long catch-up of my Bible study. She approached me at the counter and said, “Hi, do you need a job?” Haha! Fortunately, I didn’t need one, but we got to talking and I just love her! It’s so fun to walk in there now and see a friendly face. It makes me feel like so much less of an outsider.

Joel and I also met the owner of our local used bookstore, Dog Ear Books - such a cute name isn’t it?? Not only do they sell used books of ALL kinds, but they sell fun stationery, old music records, coffee drinks galore and locally produced dairy products. On top of that, they bring in authors from all over the country and host awesome events all the time! Shamefully, I cannot remember the owner’s name – I think it was Josh or John or James – one of those solid “J” names. But he is so friendly and willing to give you a full run-down on any book you want to know about. If you click on the link to the store, you can look at a list of books he recommends. He even gives you a brief synopsis of why he recommends them. Oh, and I’m not sure if I mentioned this, but the bookstore is in this historic, beautiful Madison house – like one of those that Sherman couldn’t bear to burn down. And they have a cat. I don’t like cats – but this cat is awesome. He welcomes you whenever you enter the house and he drinks out of the fishbowl, on the super-high mantel – the one with a fish in it.

Hmm, let’s see. We also have become semi-close with the associate pastor at the Methodist church we got married at – Pastor Troy. He is awesome! He has invited us to go to a few different things in Madison to get to know people. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to go to anything yet – but we will. Troy’s last four digits of his phone number spell T-R-O-Y… I just think that’s cool.

I’m sorry if you’re getting bored by now. It’s just fun to share Madison with other people – it’s such an amazing little town. Feel free to take a break and come back later to finish the second half. I won’t judge you.

The front page of last Friday’s local paper was the announcement of a prayer vigil for a local girl who is battling a serious form of cancer. That just doesn’t happen in Atlanta. And, sometimes, when I go to Wal-Mart, I see two old men just sitting on the bench next to the hair salon, just chatting. They wear suspenders, hold their canes and say hello to every person that walks by. …Could I have created a more perfect town??

Just around the corner from us is the Madison Produce Company. Basically, this guy works or volunteers at the DeKalb Farmer’s Market and gets to bring that fresh produce over to Madison every day. This little shop embodies everything I love about Madison. It’s small, just a one-room little store. It’s fresh, everything other than the produce was made in and around Madison. And it’s friendly, the family who owns the store is there every day and is there to serve the Madisonians. Every time I’m in there, I think how much Katie and Kayleigh would love it.

We went to dinner with one of the few young couples in town on Friday. Their names are Megan and Merritt. Merritt, bless his heart, drives ten minutes further than me every day to work. Yes, one way. We have exciting, hopeful conversations about the future of hybrid vehicles. He drives a Prius. We might get a Prius. Megan is a kindergarten teacher. They have the coolest story of how they met, fell in love, got married and spent the first 15 months of marriage. And they know a few other young couples in town. We are very excited about this.

Finally, I went to the Madison Morgan Cultural Center two Sundays ago to see the Andy Warhol exhibit. I am not a huge Andy fan, but it was cool to see authentic prints of his like this:

and this:

and this:

Anyway, I spent a little time getting to know more about Andy and then I moved on to the history of our new town. The Cultural Center has a history of all of the houses in Madison and tells the story of the important figures throughout the past two centuries. I loved learning more about this new place I call home.

All of these experiences have increased my love for Madison one hundred-fold. I can’t wait to meet more people, to learn more things, to spend more years here.

There’s no place like home.

Finally….

So I still haven’t found my camera cord. However, I realized that Joel’s memory card from his camera fits into a little slot on my Mac. So, wa-la, I have pictures for you! We’ll start out with a little of the honeymoon, then move onto some pics of us in our new home and then some other odds and ends things. I think they got a little out of order when publishing, so I apologize for the disorder. (Please note the amount of pictures from the honeymoon including Joel eating sushi – a delicacy he HATED before we got married!) Enjoy!

CopCo, Keurig and Caribou, Oh My!

I have a 1.5 hour drive one-way every single workday. I have to leave my house at 6:45 a.m. I am not a morning person.

These three statements should make it very clear why I have to have my morning coffee.

So, the first thing on my wedding registry was the Keurig Single Cup Coffee Machine - it is a miracle worker. Each morning, all I have to do to prepare my cup of coffee is stick a little K-cup in the machine and press the blue button to begin. Then, I’m on my way.

Well Keurig produces several K-cup choices for your coffee-drinking pleasure. For the first two months I made the commute, I was experimenting with as many coffee blends as you could find: Green Mountain Coffee, the Donut House, Gloria Jean’s, Tully’s, Emeril’s, Newman’s Own, etc. Most of them were just not the right fit.

But then, last week I came across the winner: Caribou Coffee, medium blend. It’s delicious with a couple teaspoons of white chocolate mocha creamer. Mmmmmmmm!

It was a remarkable moment. Now, I wake up every day, knowing I can count on my friends to get me through the morning… and those who know me well know that is no small task.
