Settling In

It probably comes as no surprise that Joel and I have been keeping our schedule pretty full since we got married. It’s not that we like being insanely busy, it’s just habit I think.

Well, thankfully, we have been intentional lately about sticking around Madison and making it home.

It’s amazing how friendly everyone is here and how willing they are to welcome us into their town. In the past two weeks, we’ve gotten to meet a ton of incredible people. Each person we meet and the experiences we have reinforce my belief that God has specifically put us in Madison for a purpose.

So, last week, we met our precious neighbor Christy (I know, I know – we’ve lived here two months and just met our neighbor – I’m an awful person!) - a wonderful, godly girl who has a passion for helping others, demonstrated by her most recent jobs at DFCS and Mercy Health Center in Athens. I truly hope we become better friends – she is a joy to be around.

I also met Jolene, who owns our local coffee shop – Perk Avenue. It is incredible! It’s coffee shop meets weekend restaurant meets jazz bar. Needless to say, I spend as much time there as possible. If you ever get a chance to visit and you like sweet things – try the Candy Bar coffee drink: it’s a mix of caramel and chocolate – delish! Anyway, back to Jolene. My first encounter with her was when I was ordering coffee, preparing to do a day-long catch-up of my Bible study. She approached me at the counter and said, “Hi, do you need a job?” Haha! Fortunately, I didn’t need one, but we got to talking and I just love her! It’s so fun to walk in there now and see a friendly face. It makes me feel like so much less of an outsider.

Joel and I also met the owner of our local used bookstore, Dog Ear Books - such a cute name isn’t it?? Not only do they sell used books of ALL kinds, but they sell fun stationery, old music records, coffee drinks galore and locally produced dairy products. On top of that, they bring in authors from all over the country and host awesome events all the time! Shamefully, I cannot remember the owner’s name – I think it was Josh or John or James – one of those solid “J” names. But he is so friendly and willing to give you a full run-down on any book you want to know about. If you click on the link to the store, you can look at a list of books he recommends. He even gives you a brief synopsis of why he recommends them. Oh, and I’m not sure if I mentioned this, but the bookstore is in this historic, beautiful Madison house – like one of those that Sherman couldn’t bear to burn down. And they have a cat. I don’t like cats – but this cat is awesome. He welcomes you whenever you enter the house and he drinks out of the fishbowl, on the super-high mantel – the one with a fish in it.

Hmm, let’s see. We also have become semi-close with the associate pastor at the Methodist church we got married at – Pastor Troy. He is awesome! He has invited us to go to a few different things in Madison to get to know people. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to go to anything yet – but we will. Troy’s last four digits of his phone number spell T-R-O-Y… I just think that’s cool.

I’m sorry if you’re getting bored by now. It’s just fun to share Madison with other people – it’s such an amazing little town. Feel free to take a break and come back later to finish the second half. I won’t judge you.

The front page of last Friday’s local paper was the announcement of a prayer vigil for a local girl who is battling a serious form of cancer. That just doesn’t happen in Atlanta. And, sometimes, when I go to Wal-Mart, I see two old men just sitting on the bench next to the hair salon, just chatting. They wear suspenders, hold their canes and say hello to every person that walks by. …Could I have created a more perfect town??

Just around the corner from us is the Madison Produce Company. Basically, this guy works or volunteers at the DeKalb Farmer’s Market and gets to bring that fresh produce over to Madison every day. This little shop embodies everything I love about Madison. It’s small, just a one-room little store. It’s fresh, everything other than the produce was made in and around Madison. And it’s friendly, the family who owns the store is there every day and is there to serve the Madisonians. Every time I’m in there, I think how much Katie and Kayleigh would love it.

We went to dinner with one of the few young couples in town on Friday. Their names are Megan and Merritt. Merritt, bless his heart, drives ten minutes further than me every day to work. Yes, one way. We have exciting, hopeful conversations about the future of hybrid vehicles. He drives a Prius. We might get a Prius. Megan is a kindergarten teacher. They have the coolest story of how they met, fell in love, got married and spent the first 15 months of marriage. And they know a few other young couples in town. We are very excited about this.

Finally, I went to the Madison Morgan Cultural Center two Sundays ago to see the Andy Warhol exhibit. I am not a huge Andy fan, but it was cool to see authentic prints of his like this:

and this:

and this:

Anyway, I spent a little time getting to know more about Andy and then I moved on to the history of our new town. The Cultural Center has a history of all of the houses in Madison and tells the story of the important figures throughout the past two centuries. I loved learning more about this new place I call home.

All of these experiences have increased my love for Madison one hundred-fold. I can’t wait to meet more people, to learn more things, to spend more years here.

There’s no place like home.

Finally….

So I still haven’t found my camera cord. However, I realized that Joel’s memory card from his camera fits into a little slot on my Mac. So, wa-la, I have pictures for you! We’ll start out with a little of the honeymoon, then move onto some pics of us in our new home and then some other odds and ends things. I think they got a little out of order when publishing, so I apologize for the disorder. (Please note the amount of pictures from the honeymoon including Joel eating sushi – a delicacy he HATED before we got married!) Enjoy!

Mawiage, that bwessed awangement

Marriage… it truly is incredible! Especially when you’re married to the guy who makes it a priority to serve you every day.

Right now, my life consists of going home to the person I love the most every day. We write a few thank you notes from our wedding, eat some dinner, watch some of The Office, read and go to bed. It’s incredible!

On top of that, being married and not wedding planning allows me to actually see the other people I love and care about! We had an amazing dinner at La Parilla last week… now I’m trying to come up with a fun gal get-together. Any good ideas??

A Kind Word

I am super blessed because I’m constantly surrounded by people who encourage me. Even my friends who tend to mock me more than encourage me let me know that they support me in everything. This is a huge blessing.

But I’m starting to learn that the encouragement that goes the furthest is the one you’re not expecting, from someone you don’t expect to receive it from.

For example, today: I am up to my eyeballs in last-minute projects before I leave on my honeymoon. Those who know me know that I let myself get way too stressed over insignificant things. So I’ve done that to myself today. Well then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, someone (who could have been very frustrated with me because I have to delay getting something to her) sent a quick word of encouragement my way. It’s like loads and loads of stress was just lifted off my shoulders.

Good gracious, is it obvious that I’m a “words of affirmation” love-languager?? :)

It’s Sunny, Yay!

I was looking through some of my favorite blogs today and came across this gem of wisdom from my friend, Lindsey:

My last post was written two weeks ago.

Though it was unintentional, I guess you could say that I was taking a sabbatical from my blog…a blog-atical, if you will.

I don’t really know how it happened, but it did. In fact, there were quite a few things that happened during my absence that I could have blogged about. But, I didn’t blog. And, it was in that not blogging that I realized something about myself.

I’m a creature of habit, but get me out of my routine and it’s almost as if I never had the habit to begin with. This is true in so many areas of my life.

Eating. Exercising. Journaling. Reading. Calling friends. Spending time with the Lord. And now, blogging.

I’ve known that for a long time…but the aha came in understanding why.

I struggle to forgive myself for getting out of the routine. Instead of just saying, oh well…I missed it…I end up getting so frustrated with myself for getting off track. Then, before I know it, I look back and I’m not just off track, I’m on a whole new road. It can take me days, weeks, months to get back into the swing of things. It’s not a good rut to get stuck in.

That is SOO me…

So I apologize about not blogging, but sometimes it’s good to do things when you can and not worry about it when you can’t. Give yourself a little grace, you know?

If you want to read the rest of the post, go here.

And, also, today I am thankful for sunny Fall days. They remind me of football, barbecues, waiting on the bus for school, Festivus and jumping through the leaves. I can’t wait until they start falling!

We’re Engaged!!!

Joel proposed on Saturday!!! Several people have been asking for the whole story, so here you go! (I’m sorry it’s so long… I wanted to include everything!)

A few weeks back, we realized that our favorite band (The Alternate Routes) were in Charleston on Sept. 5. With the concert taking place during Labor Day weekend, I suggested that we go and Joel was totally on board. Little did I know, this spontaneous plan provided him with the perfect opportunity to pop the question!

So we started planning this fun weekend, complete with visiting our friends Luke and Christine – the reason we’re together in the first place, seeing how we met at their wedding! As plans came together, his brothers decided to come along (they were there the night we met) and Ben and Amanda decided to come as well (Ben was the one who introduced us)! So, everyone instrumental in our meeting ended up being in Charleston, which was so wonderful.

Friday night, Joel mentioned that he’d like to go to the beach just for a little bit on Saturday morning. “You can’t come to Charleston and not see the beach!” he said. So of course I agreed we should go.

Little did I know that Saturday morning, as Joel and I made our way over to Sullivan’s Island, Luke and Christine had built a dune a little ways down from where we parked that let Joel know where to propose. So as soon as we started walking, Joel kept trying to get me to walk in the dry sand. Being a baby, I pulled him over to the water and would not give into his attempts to get me to walk back up in the dry sand. He tried everything from “I don’t like the way my feet get sandy after they get wet” to “That dune got separated from his family. Let’s go see it.” But I was not having it.

So we completely passed the dune and kept walking down the beach, with Joel racking his brain to come up with a way to get me to go over to the dune. Finally, when we turned around and walked back down the beach, he said that we could keep walking in the water in a minute, but first we had to go do something.

Still not aware of what was about to happen, I followed Joel up to the dune. When we got there, I stumbled across the Cheerwine bottle with an antique-looking message in it that he had written. For a split second, I thought maybe he was proposing. But then I remembered that he had just asked me the week before to start looking at rings I liked so that he could have an idea of what I wanted… so I thought he was a month or so away from being ready to propose. Plus, it wasn’t out of the ordinary for him to do something like this for me, so I thought it was just Joel taking an opportunity to be sweet and romantic.

We kept on talking for another thirty seconds or so and I was mid-sentence when he dropped down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I was in total shock, but after a couple of seconds, I was able to say, “YES!!”

Luke and Christine, disguised as a dune and a sunbather respectively, took pictures of the moment for us, so I will make sure and upload those as soon as I get them!

After the proposal, we went to a delicious lunch together and then watched the UGA game with all of our friends. We ended the perfect day (minus UGA losing) with the concert and headed back to Madison in the morning.

When we got there, Joel surprised me yet again with an engagement party with several of our friends and our families! It was incredible to get to share our joy with those we love so much!

On top of all of it, because of Labor Day, we had Monday to relax and soak everything in! It was such a perfect weekend and we are so excited about the future!!

Game Night

I love games! A whole lot. So when Audrey asked everyone to save a night for games with the roomies and our significant others, I was completely on board!

Unfortunately though, Joel (due to his new job in Athens – which deserves its own post) wasn’t going to be able to make it. My back-up boyfriend, Ben, was generously willing to fill-in for Joel and be my game partner. As game night approached, I got excited that, even if I didn’t get to hang out with Joel, I would at least get to spend some catch-up time with Ben.

Well imagine my surprise when, as I’m talking to him on the phone, Joel pulls up next to my house right before game night was supposed to commence. :) I was so excited!! And completely surprised!

The night was a blast, complete with Catchphrase, Apples to Apples and the best cheesecake ever (ADAM’S PEANUT BUTTER CUP FUDGE RIPPLE Creamy Cheesecake Swirled with Caramel, Peanut Butter, Butterfingers® and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups®)!

Oh Poplar Grove house, deep down, I will miss you.

My Life in Pictures (Since My Computer Got Stolen in December and All My Pictures Were Taken Along With It)

Haha, sorry that was an obnoxious title… but I realized I couldn’t honestly say it was my life in pictures. There are several pictures from my childhood that I need to convert into digital files that will not be on here, as well as several that got lost forever when my computer was stolen. Children, let this be a lesson to all of us to PURCHASE AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE!!

Nevertheless, I thought it would be fun to post some of the pictures I’m most thankful for that I still have. Some will be of friends or family, some will just be favorite pictures that I think look cool. Either way, I’m thankful for them and want to share!

Blogging Friends

So, I love my friends. But as they will ALL tell you, I never see most of them. Somehow, I manage to pack my schedule (without really knowing what I’m doing half the time) and not see them for weeks on end. I also happen to HATE the phone. Like hate it. Really loathe, despise, abhor it. And texting really isn’t too much fun either. I love writing letters, but I don’t ever sit down and write them either. This makes it difficult to stay in touch with those I love so much. Whatever could solve my problem?

Enter: blogging.

In the last year or so, more of my friends have begun blogs. It makes me so happy! So now I can keep up with them fairly often… no matter how long we go without seeing each other. :)

Long Overdue

My best friend in the whole world got married last month. Between getting to see the laser show, spending the weekend reuniting with old friends and watching my bff marry the love of her life who adores the ground she walks on, it was a pretty incredible weekend.

We haven’t gotten the pictures back yet, as far as I know, but for now, my pictures will have to do. (I apologize if you’ve already looked through these on facebook.)
